Musical reinvention as an artist is always a tricky beast as you risk alienating your current fans by stepping away from the sound they know and love by moving a new direction with an alternate appeal.
London-based singer-songwriter Anna Pancaldi flew onto our radar this month with Peace (which can be streamed below), another step in her new electric guitar-led indie pop direction that’s a grittier, more grassroots departure from the cinematic grandeur of her 2017 EP Sweet Charity that was reminiscent of the likes of Florence & The Machine and Adele. Quite frankly we’re loving her new sound, it’s down-to-earth, has all the hallmarks of her polished songwriting past and fills us with a desire to move.
We caught up with her to gain further insight.
Hey Anna! Thanks for taking the time to speak with us. To start with, how would describe your new sound and how you came to it?
Playing the electric guitar has opened up so many avenues and pushed me in a new direction which has been a thrill. It’s more pop sounding and something you can get your foot tapping too and sing along with!
Can you both narrow it down to a song, album or artist that inspired you to start making music
Well if I’m being completely honest, my music first came to me through having been through some hardships and the music, the need for expression was paramount. However, I was in love with the music of Carol King, Judy Garland, Stevie Wonder while I was growing up and I’m sure in part, it has subconsciously reflected in my music.
Can you tell us something about yourself that our readers might not know already?
Well on a none musical note my brother, sister and I used to drink peas and juice. Sounds gross right! haha!
But on a musical front, I used to have stage fright and burst into tears on stage. It really crippled me for a long time, but after moving to South Africa as a child for a few years, my most wonderful singing teacher managed to push me through that.
What can we look forward to from you next?
I’ll be dropping a few more singles and then heading out to LA for some writing and touring next year before heading back for Europe more shows. So lot’s more music and shows. I can’t wait!
