Stepping out from the shadows of their typical studio dwellings, producers Bleu and Daple triumph in their bold strides into the fore as electronic music duo Coach & Ref. Described as a “potent fusion of indie-pop and retro-futurism. Nostalgic soundscapes and lo-fi tones seamlessly dovetail overt melodicism and bangin’ beats”, they meld the neon-clad sounds of the past with the boundary-pushing and warped sounds of the future.

Coach & Ref are more than worth a spot on your radar as their journey has only just begun, we caught up with them for further insight.

Thanks for taking the time to speak with us. To start with, how would describe your sound and how you came to it?
I’d say the Coach & Ref style channels visions of retro-futurism with a potent fusion of indie and pop, with a big smile!
We started out as two artists and songwriters experimenting with recording techniques and equipment (especially vintage synths) in the studio, and this soon became a serious passion and a desire to share our love of artier micro-genres.Bleu, a Berklee grad, is a celebrated artist, award-winning songwriter and producer, having penned Platinum and Gold tracks for Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Jonas Brothers, as well as a number of films.

Daple is a songwriter, producer, and composer.  An Eastman School of Music graduate, Daple has created original music and scores that can be heard in a number of films.
Can you both narrow it down to a song, album or artist that inspired you to start writing music?

Our initial inspiration came from a good friend sending us the track “Like You” by Rywolf. Our sound quickly evolved from that tiny spark from this pop duo.

What influences your music that we wouldn’t expect?

Our love for 80’s and 90’s film & TV music and media and composing and sound effects.  Everything from Airwolf to the old THX logo.

Can you tell us something about yourself that our readers might not know already?

A lot of the sounds we use are true vintage keyboards and synthesizers and not “in the box” sounds.  We love to keep subtle human imperfections to our songs.

What’s next and on the horizon for Coach & Ref?

At the moment we’re focused on really getting the band off the ground. Releasing music that’s already finished, getting the live show really polished complete with creative visuals, and continuing to write new songs as our sound develops.
