In a current age where band reformations are becoming more of a common occurrence, it’s sad to see that the original line-up from Neutral Milk Hotel’s critically cherished album In The Aeroplane Over The Sea has gone so criminally overlooked. Since reforming in Autumn 2013, the band has travelled worldwide, to countries that they previously couldn’t, following the cult adoration of the album spread to numerous blogs and publications, and also led to their music being interpreted by bands such as Brand New, The Avett Brothers and Amanda Palmer.
The band were forced to add four more dates to their UK & Ireland tour due to overwhelming demand from fans. Setlists from the world tour show that the entirety of In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is being, performed minus ‘Communist Daughter’ which hasn’t been performed at all. The stacked setlist also includes ‘Song Against Sex’ and ‘A Baby for Pree’ from the bands debut album On Avery Island, as well as ‘Engine’ which was an outtake from the Aeroplane sessions which features the haunting singing saw provided by Julian Koster, who also returns for this tour.
Whether this tour is just an indication of new material to come or just the celebration of a beloved record, it is one that should not be missed, and hopefully the band consider coming back over for festival season.
