As far as smaller festivals go, Slam Dunk kind of takes the cake. With a little something for everyone, whether you’re heading down in the search for the best new thing or a little nostalgia, Slam Dunk Festival is the must-see festival for kicking off the summer. It’s set to return again 27th-29th May and we’ve handpicked five must-see acts for you to check out.

1. ANDREW MCMAHON IN THE WILDERNESS – JAGERMEISTER STAGE
Kicking off the day just as doors open is Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness. His self-titled debut album under the synonym was an absolute triumph, full of feel good tracks that you could imagine listening to while laying out in the sun. It’s the perfect way to kick off your Slam Dunk Festival while you indulge on your first, of many, beers (if you’re of age of course).

2. CUTE IS WHAT WE AIM FOR – MONSTER ENERGY STAGE
Calling all twenty-somethings, if you were a teenager raised on Fueled By Ramen bands then there’s a high chance you’ll have heard of Cute Is What We Aim For. More importantly, you’ll have heard of their decade old album Same Old Blood Rush With A New Touch, the same album that CIWWAF are pitted to play in it’s entirety at the festival this year. Yes, that is a fifty minute set of pure gold emo anthems, Moan, Curse of Curves and more that you would have no doubt sang into your hairbrush while flicking that sweeping side fringe out of your eyes. Who wouldn’t want to relive that?

3. COUNTERFEIT – IMPERICON STAGE
You may well recognise vocalist Jamie Campbell Bower, as an actor he has been seen in the likes of The Mortal Instruments and musical horror epic Sweeney Todd. However, away from the silver screen, Bower has quite the rockstar voice and his talents, we think, are much better suited as the frontman of Counterfeit. They’ve been making waves as one of the hottest alternative bands as of late and are sure to bring bundles of pure raw energy to the fest. So, if you’re looking for something a little bit more gritty and loud, Counterfeit are the perfect band for you.

4. FRANK IERO AND THE PATIENCE – SIGNATURE BREW STAGE
Since the unfortunate demise of My Chemical Romance, Frank Iero has blessed us all with some incredible raw music. His talents have been seen with the cellabration and now they’re showcased with the patience. Those growling vocals are sure to echo in a room and pull everyone into a frenzy. Paired with it’s grungy instrumentals, Frank Iero and the Patience’s set is sure to be a rowdy one and it’s not one you’ll want to miss.

5. AGAINST ME! – SIGNATURE BREW STAGE
So the world is kind of going to shit, with Trump as President, a snap election and the threat of nuclear war looming over our heads, sometimes some politically charged punk is just what you need to get out all of your frustration. Let the powerful lyrics of Laura Jane Grace and the fast upbeat instrumentals be the soundtrack to your Slam Dunk this year. Feel liberated as you check all bad thoughts and the terrible things of the world at the door; because nothing is better than feeling free and ending a great day thrashing around in a sweaty pit of people, screaming the words to the likes of ‘True Trans Soul Rebel’ and ‘Black Me Out’.
