Standing out in the UK electronic music scene is West-Midlands’ greatly unique production duo TC4, consisting of Tom Calder and Kate Turley. Their sound is a complex, yet smooth blend of grime, UK garage, dubstep and house (among many others), suggesting that they deny being tied down to a specific style.
The duo made a name for themselves remixing the likes of Lioness and Cleo Sol, the latter seeing airtime on BBC Radio 1xtra, building hype about their eclectic style. Their hyperactive and hard-hitting debut EP Alpha (available to purchase here), was signed by grime DJ and resident of Kiss FM, Logan Sam, to his Earth 616 imprint, and is a perfect portrayal of their experimental and fresh sound.
Aside from Alpha, the duo have recently gotten into beat making, and their first foray into this side of the scene is the highly anticipated release of the La La La VIP, a grime/trap reincarnation of the explosive original. Sama has taken a shine to the track and a variety of guests on his Kiss FM show often freestyle over it, you can check out Tempa T and Kruz Leone’s version here.
Translating their tight, electronic sound to the stage involves Tom taking to the decks and Kate blows some minds by adding extra energy and flair to performance with live drums, as seen below in a powerful performance of La La La.
The direction for such a forward-thinking and distinctive duo is unknown, but if you’re a fan of fresh, boundary-pushing music, don’t sleep on these two. Be sure to check out their Facebook, Youtube, SoundCloud and Twitter. You can also check out a summer mix they did for SBTV right here
