IYES are the Brighton-based electronic duo of Josh Christopher and Melis Soyaslanova. Coming from two very different musical backgrounds, they blend hard-hitting and intricate electronica with infectious pop hooks to create a sound that blends the bittersweet vocal melodies of The xx with the impressive over-production and spiraling synths of the likes of Purity Ring. However, it is clear that IYES are looking to create something very unique.
The ‘demos’ available on their SoundCloud page show their talent in some very contrasting styles, and are produced to such a high standard that it begs the question – if these are the bedroom ‘demos’, what will their upcoming debut release be like? With some notable radio airplay and their spotlight as The Times Culture Magazine’s ‘Breaking Act’ for 2013, not to mention nearly 200,000 YouTube hits and popular remixes by the likes of Hannah Wants, big things seem to be ahead for IYES. And they’ve only been together for about a year.
After several critically acclaimed shows in Brighton and London, and appearances at The Great Escape and Tramlines Festival, they are reducing their gigging schedule in June and July awaiting their new release. They are certain to reignite following this, so be sure to see them while you can.
